About the Chess Club at UTD
"Chess is the gymnasium of the mind" ~ Blaise Pascal
There are many benefits to playing chess, and every individual person has different reasons for enjoying this timeless game. Whether you like the logic behind the moves, take pleasure in thinking through a combination, or just love board games as an entertaining way to pass the time, chess is the right game for you; and The Chess Club at UTD is the right place for you.
The Chess Club at UTD meets on Fridays at 3 p.m., and is an informal place where students, faculty, and staff of all levels can gather, socialize, and play a few recreational games. It doesn't matter if you are not sure exactly how the knight moves, if your little sibling demolishes you every time you play, or if you have competed in tournaments before the Chess Club invites you to join! Meetings are open and free to the public!
Please note that there IS a difference between the very serious Chess Team (winner of numerous awards) and the recreational Chess Club. Some students at UTD that enjoy the wonderful game of chess, feel intimidated to go to the Chess Club meetings because they feel that they are outmatched by the players on the #1 ranked Collegiate Chess Team in the country. Rest your fears! The Chess Club and the Chess Team are two separate programs! The Chess Team is ultra-competitive and thrives on producing the best results, while the Chess Club is for players who are partial to a leisure game of chess from time to time.
In addition to being a gathering place for enthusiastic players, the UTD Chess Club also organizes tournaments and donates to charity.
